Soneva Fushi starts work to become Maldives’ first carbon neutral resort
Soneva Fushi, a resort run in Baa atoll by Six Senses and Spa, has announced that it will aim to become Maldives’ first carbon neutral resort.
President Mohamed Nasheed this year announced to the world that Maldives will do everything possible to become the world’s first carbon neutral country within 10 years.
Soneva Fushi’s Human Resource Assistant Manager Mauroof Mohamed told Eydhafushi Times that the resort has notified the Environment Ministry of its intention to become Maldives’ first carbon neutral resort.
Among the projects to be launched to make the resort achieve carbon neutrality is harnessing of solar energy, Mauroof said.
The resort, which is the most eco friendly one in the archipelago, already has a recycling plant called Eco Centro, which recycles garbage; it was inaugurated this year by Vice President Dr. Mohamed Waheed Hassan Manik.
The resort also has a Deep Sea Cooling System circulating sea water to provide cooling to its rooms instead of employing CFC-emitting air-conditioners. Mauroof said that currently the resort is trying to set up a system to draw sea water from 300 meters below the sea for use in the cooling system.
Soneva Fushi is a favorite exclusive hideaway for well-heeled Western personalities like American pop star Madonna.
